Grilled meat, cold beer and bottle rockets! These are the things we associate with the 4th of July. But, what are we really celebrating? Why does the entire country acknowledge this holiday across the board? As we lick the BBQ sauce from our fingers this year, let’s set down that beer and really focus on what this holiday is actually all about.
What this day actually commemorates are the events in 1776 when the Second Continental Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, officially declaring the colonies' independence from the tyrannical rule of Britain. So, what does that mean? It was the actual birth of our freedom as an independent country. The day we stood up and refused to be ruled any longer.
Had these events never occurred, we would all likely still be sipping garbage tea and paying exorbitant taxes to the crown. That moment in time solidified this great nation as a world power. We severed our connection to Great Britain and the original 13 colonies became independent.
America as we know it was born on the 4th of July. Forged in patriotism and baptized in fundamental thought. The Declaration of Independence was carefully sculpted for future generations to be protected from tyranny of any kind. Be thankful today for our forefathers efforts and sacrifice that made this great country of ours.
