Way back on June 6, 1944 one of the most pivotal events of World War II took place on the beachheads of Normandy, France. Brave young men risked everything in a coordinated effort to push back the invading enemy and bring with them the wave of unstoppable freedom.
This was the largest amphibious invasion in history. The operation contained 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. D-Day would forever go down in history as not only a military success, but also for the tremendous sacrifices made by so many who knew the landing would likely bring death.
These beachheads were well fortified. The invasion was met with heavy fire from gun emplacement overlooking the beaches. As if this weren’t enough, the soldiers had to navigate beaches filled with mines, wooden stakes, metal tripods and barbed wire. This made the job of the beach-clearing teams difficult and extremely dangerous.
Thousands of men died on that day. Giving their lives in the name of freedom. We should never forget the sacrifices of those who came before us. These sacrifices grant us the freedom we enjoy today.
